Master’s Program of Communication


In view of departmental integration within the College of Communication, the Master's Programs in "Journalism," "Advertising" and "Radio & Television" have been reconstituted into the "Master's Program of Communication" starting from the 2014 academic year. The program curriculum has been designed to integrate educational resources within the College, to expand and innovate existing fields of knowledge, and to provide advanced training for young professionals who are preparing to enter the communications industry. To better address industry trends and provide students with a more comprehensive learning environment, the program will be offering a wide range of highly specialized academic courses in seven concentrations: "Communications and Culture," "Journalism and Communication," " Imagination, Narrative, and Interaction," "Telecommunication Policy and Management," "Integrated Communication," "Science and Risk Communication," and "China Studies in Communication." Students are also encouraged to engage in self-directed learning by designing their own curriculum on condition of receiving the approval of their academic advisors as well as the College of Communication.

 

The master’s program is structured around concentrations, with students choosing their own concentration in their first year. Once they’ve completed the College’s requirements, core curriculum, and requirements for their concentration, students can register for seminars of their choice. The Master's Program of Communication jointly offer seven primary concentrations, as well as an online master’s programs in international communications that provides professional development to individuals already working in the field.

Concentrations

Communication and Cultures
The program emphasizes cross-disciplinary research aimed at exploring, analyzing, and studying the mechanisms and results of interactions between communications media and other fields. The program helps students develop a solid background in theory and research, making it a good fit for those who plan to pursue Ph.D.s.

Journalism, Information & Communication Program
The program trains students in reporting and writing, storytelling, and cross-media production, building fundamental skills in idea generation, composition, information gathering, and presentation. The program also places great emphasis on the development of professional ethics.

Imagination, Narratives, and Interactivity Program
The program trains professionals to produce content for traditional and emerging forms of new media. It teaches students fundamental and advanced production skills, and hones their ability to think creatively, critically, and independently. It also seeks to broaden students’ understanding of the humanities and the arts in order to add depth to their work and provide them with a background in narrative theory.

Telecommunications Policy and Management Program
The program explores the media ecology and investigates its evolution from the standpoint of policy and administration. Responding to the growth of the industry as whole, the program also draws on information from related fields. Its objective is to provide students with a broad, well-informed perspective, as well as the ability to analyze both the internal management structures and the external environment of the communications, telecommunications, and Internet industries.

Integrated Communications Program
The program deepens students’ understanding of the theory and practical application of advertising and public relations. It also provides students with the opportunity to meet and interact with professionals in the aesthetic and design industries by arranging seminars on digital content, arts management, experiential marketing, aesthetic economics, and the creative and cultural industries.

China Studies in Communications
Because Taiwan and China, are geographical close and in regular contact, studies in communication are becoming a distinct research field to explore. This program has been developed by our graduate institute to extend our research on communication to a new level, based on studies research in the Chinese-speaking world. We also aim to integrate communication studies with other disciplines, thus creating invaluable resources for our college and other specialties at the university. Students will be trained in observation of and research on the communication phenomena in the Chinese-speaking world, especially in Taiwan and China. Professionals who are required to understand the current situation of communication across the Strait are also welcome.

Science and Risk Communication
This program is developed to cultivate specialists in communication and the media, and who have a full understanding of contemporary science and its risks. Students receive both theoretical and practical training across different disciplines.

Interdisciplinary Program
The program allows students to design a personalized and interdisciplinary course of study not subject to the limitations of the core curriculum.
